Creativity Isn’t Just a Muse, It’s a Habit

Creativity· Mentoring/Coaching· Offering· Planning· Spirit

While I’m all about attracting the Muse into your life, you really can’t do that if you’re just exercising your creative muscles once in a while. I heard someone once say, “you can’t just visit, you have to live there”. That might seem like a lot of work, but it’s really not. Even if you just dedicate just 15-30 minutes most days, you’ll create a “habit”. The general consensus is that if you do something for 30 days, it becomes a habit. If you’re looking to live creatively, it’s important to make it a habit; It’s important to incorporate it into your every day life.

So How Do You Do That?

It’s not as hard as you might think. There are all kinds of ways to incorporate more creativity into your life. You could create a new recipe, a simmer pot that you customize to incorporate your favorite scents, make your own salad dressing, your own compound butter, flavored mayonnaise. And that’s just the kitchen. You could break it down into creative activities for every room. You could create a list of ideas for creativity. That might seem less than spontaneous, but spontaneity is not what we’re going for. Creativity is.

This Is What I Do

So this year, for my birthday, I decided to be really public about my creative endeavors. I committed to myself to do something creative, every single day. I decided that in order to keep myself honest, I would execute and post one creative activity on social media, every day. I thought that not only would it keep me on the right path, that it might inspire someone else to try it. It’s not easy to come up with something every day and it’s really interesting that there are some things that, so far, I feel too vulnerable to share. That, in particular has me thinking about why certain things are easier to share. For me, the vulnerable spot is music. I feel kind of funny sharing that, which actually gives me food for thought about what it is that keeps me from doing it. So not only is it a creative exercise, it’s also a psychological exercise.

Breaking it Down

In order to keep track, and give myself a place to explore inspiration, I created a spread sheet with categories and ideas to do on a weekly basis. I’ve included that as a download for you (completely free, no strings attached), make your copy here. It’s “view only”, so make sure you make a copy in order to make it your own. I’ve included my ideas for categories, but they might not fit for you. Feel free to make it your own. (This is for personal use only). I also included a category for “Filling The Well“. It’s important to consume art, creativity once a week to get inspiration and it’s just enjoyable.

So tell me, how will you incorporate daily creativity into your own life? I’d love to know.
