Space to create. Do you have your own space? Even if it’s just a corner of a room, or a nook, we all need a space that makes us feel comfortable enough to open up to creativity. It’s an absolute necessity and I want to talk about why and how you might create, or improve your own.
Why Dedicated Space?
When you have your own dedicated space, any time you are struck with the inspiration to create something, it’s easy to start. This can be as complicated as your own fully stocked studio, or as simple as a desk in the corner of your living room. Maybe you have a spare bedroom that you can utilize a portion of, or even a small table in your bedroom. I’m very lucky. We have a bedroom set up as my office. I have my desk, some lighting, my computer, a comfortable wing chair and footstool (that I found at a consignment shop for about $100), a portable piano, as well as my altar and a nice big closet. This room is my catchall. It’s my office, my studio, my meditation room, my reading room, my writing room, and my sanctuary.
Beautifying Your Space
I realized recently, that it wasn’t as peaceful as I wanted it to be. I had let things get pretty messy. There was clutter all over my desk and altar, there was a printer on a file cabinet right next to my desk, that made my desk feel even more cluttered. It was not good. I got the duster and removed everything from my desk. The printer worked just as well on a table further away, and now my desk felt so much bigger.
I cleaned everything, filed what needed to be filed, and arranged things so that they pleased me. At Goodwill, I found a pretty container for all my pens and pencils. I tidied the wires for the external hard drives and interface. A couple of my favorite crystals and books that I’m constantly referencing now live where the printer was. It’s so much more lovely and it’s so much easier for me to find inspiration in the space.
Centerpieces
One of my favorite things about creating spaces, are the focal points, or centerpieces of your space. Find things that are beautiful to you and incorporate them into the space. Since I have my altar in here, I have lots of beautiful crystals, shells, objects that I’ve found in my travels, and little things that make me happy. You can find beauty everywhere and one of my favorite pieces in my space is my capiz shell piece.
Years ago, I was in Pier One and this sad little thing caught my eye. It was tangled in knots and in the clearance section for $40. I asked to speak to a manager and offered her $20 for it. She said she couldn’t go that low, so I asked how many people were going to be willing to sit for hours and untangle it and even if they would, there was no guarantee that it was even salvageable. She agreed and I got it for $20.
I took it home and spent days with it, untangling every string. It was actually pretty meditative and when I was done, I was amazed at this beautiful piece. That was about 10 years ago and three houses ago, and it still hangs over my desk and gives me great joy, whenever I look up. If the ceiling fan is on, it makes this lovely, soft, tinkling sound. There are beautiful things everywhere. Take the time to see them!
